Tshwane Speak Out Loud is a youth poetry competition and festival which encourages youth to write and perform poetry that addresses the social issues faced by their communities. It was launched on the 1st of August 2015 and saw about 80 youth poets from Tshwane compete in elimination rounds on the day. The finals took place a week later, on the 8th of August 2015 where 10 finalists from the elimination rounds battled it out to be crowned the 2015 Tshwane Speak Out Loud Champion and Tshwane's Top poet. Xabiso Vili came out victorious and was awarded R20 000 cash, Xitha Makgetha came in second place and was awarded R10 000 cash, Modise Sekgote took 3rd place and walked away with R5 000.
5 finalists of the 2015 Tshwane Speak Out Loud Competition have been invited by Split This Rock, a Washington DC based poetry and social Justice non-profit, to take part in the 2016 Split This Rock Poetry Festival, one of DC's most notable poetry festivals taking place on the 14th - 17th April 2016 and tour Washington DC from the 11th to 26th April 2016. In addition to performing and presenting a workshop session at the Split This Rock Festival, The poets will also be performing at various venues such as DC's famous "Busboys and Poets" and The Kennedy Center as well conducting workshops at local schools.
The tour forms part of the Sister Cities international Exchange in support of the Memorandum of Understanding between Washington DC and The City of Tshwane signed in July 2011. The poetry exchange program is implemented by Washington DC based poetry and social justice non-profit Split This Rock with support from the DC Commission On the Arts and Humanities.
